Mass Follows Light

چکیده

We use comparisons between the shapes of gravitational lens galaxies and models for their mass distributions to derive statistical constraints on the alignment of the mass distribution relative to the observed lens galaxy and on the strength of tidal shear perturbations. The mass distributions are aligned with the luminous galaxies, with a ∆θ 2 1/2 < 10 • upper limit on the dispersion in the angle between the major axes. Statistical constraints, such as our bound on the misalignment between mass and light, are an important new approach to reducing the uncertainties in individual lens models, particularly for lenses used to estimate the Hubble constant.

The Dynamical Inverse Problem for Axisymmetric Stellar Systems

The standard method of modelling axisymmetric stellar systems begins from the assumption that mass follows light. The gravitational potential is then derived from the luminosity distribution, and the unique two-integral distribution function f (E, L 2 z) that generates the stellar density in this potential is found. It is shown that the gravitational potential can instead be generated directly ...

A possible gravitational lens in the Hubble Deep Field South

We model an apparent gravitational lens system HDFS 2232509–603243in the Hubble Deep Field South. The system consists of a blue V = 25 mag arc separated by 0. ′′9 from a red V = 22 mag elliptical galaxy. A mass distribution which follows the observed light distribution with a constant mass-to-light ratio can fit the arc component positions if external shear is added. A good fit is also obtained...

Massive Stars as Important Contributors to Two Micron Light

Near infrared light at 2m is relatively insensitive to the presence of hot young stars and dust in galaxies, and there has been recent interest in using it as a mass tracer in spiral galaxies. I present evidence that young, cool supergiant stars, whose presence is indicated by strong CO absorption in a 2:36m bandpass, dominate the 2m light from active star forming regions in the galaxy NGC 1309...

A study on the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in extensive air showers

The dependence of the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in simulated extensive air showers to the energy and the mass of the primary cosmic rays has been studied. It has been shown that a previous claim about mass independent proportionality of shower energy to the total Cherenkov photon number is not valid in energies below EEAS ~ 1014 eV. We have found that the core distance of the so c...

Low mass X-ray binaries as stellar mass indicator of the host galaxy

Using results of Chandra observations of old stellar systems in eleven nearby galaxies of various morphological types and census of LMXBs in the Milky Way we study population of low mass X-ray binaries and their relation to the mass of the host galaxy. We show that azimuthally averaged spatial distribution of the number of LMXBs and, in the majority of cases, of their collective luminosity clos...
